EVENT 1|Why Micro Narratives, a Critical Agenda
Talk by Dr. Linda C.H. Lai
🕒 3:00–4:00pm
💛 Suggested donation to support Floating Projects 建議捐贈,支持「據點」:50 HKD

”Micro Narratives” is an umbrella term Linda Lai coined in 2003 to articulate her conceptual-critical exploration of moving image creation. As a research agenda, it is also closely linked to her history-writing experiments that seek to unfold the textures of everyday life. While history and the past are typically conveyed and passed on through narratives, Lai questions the conventional narrative methods that are partial to monumental history and grand discourses. Lai uses the “micro” to speak of the ”small“ in everyday life, which is impregnated with concrete doings and purposes left out in accounts of regime history and economic success stories.

Micro-narratives are about retraining our attention to embrace the complexity of our existence. What is micro and small in fact more powerfully points to the grand, revealing the many almost visible and invisible linkages that form the network of contemporary global living. The micro-histories of the everyday are paths to reveal our agency or the lack of it. Nothing “micro” or small is trivial. And what is the place of sight-and-sound creation in all of this?

EVENT 2|My Micro Narratives: what is on my 3-years-3-places c.v. slip?
a tea gathering with story-telling
🕓 4:00–6:00pm (Free walk-in)

Thank you for generously leaving your 3-years-3-places ”personal c.v.“ at the exhibition ”Folds, Wrinkles and Crevices of the Everyday.“ The white cards are now assembled, in need of your narration in person to complete the narrative. Please visit Floating Projects (4-6pm): a tea gathering is awaiting you to pick up your c.v. or, even better, to exchange it with new friends with whom you may find a special connection.

Personal stories are constructed narratives; years and places together offer hints of the milieu in which we have lived. Another way to experience how “micro narratives” connect with the “big.”
